The Islands
and the Whales
United Kingdom/Denmark | 2017 | 84 min
Documentary Feature
Director/Producer:
Mike Day
In the North Atlan!c archipelago of the Faroe Is‐
lands the tradi!onal hun!ng of seabirds and pilot
whales con!nues to provide food for the table, but
many doubt this way of life will con!nue. Local
species of seabirds are in catastrophic decline as
plas!c flotsam fills their stomachs and pilot whales
are highly contaminated with mercury and PCBs.
A#er spending thirty years studying thousands of
the islands' children, local toxicologist Dr. Pal Weihe
reports that ea!ng the contaminated whale meat
could cause permanent cogni!ve impairment to
children exposed in the womb, and may be linked
to the islands' high rate of Parkinson's Disease, as
well as other health problems. As the islanders
come to terms with the health revela!ons, they
face increasing pressure from the outside world to
stop the whale hunts.

CLOSING NIGHT FILM! Special Screening!
Based on author David Grann’s nonfic!on best‐
seller, "The Lost City of Z" tells the incredible true
story of Bri!sh explorer Percy Fawce% (Charlie
Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the
dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence
of a previously unknown, advanced civiliza!on that
may have once inhabited the region.
Despite being ridiculed by the scien!fic establish‐
ment who regard indigenous popula!ons as “sav‐
ages,” the determined Fawce% – supported by his
devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland)
and aide‐de‐camp (Robert Pa$nson) – returns !me
and again to his beloved jungle in an a%empt to
prove his case, culmina!ng in his mysterious disap‐
pearance in 1925.
An epically‐scaled tale of courage and obsession,
told in James Gray’s classic filmmaking style, "The
Lost City of Z" is a s!rring tribute to the exploratory
spirit and those individuals driven to achieve great‐
ness at any cost.
